The kids of today, oblivious to good music?

Now before yelling at me saying, "that's a matter of opinion!" (because yes, a realize that), hear me out. I'm a fifteen year old student (sophomore) at Homestead High School. One thing I've noticed more than anything through my year's worth of experience in the hallways amidst the gossip, insinuations, mindless chatter, etc. is that the vast majority of students know nothing regarding I always believed to be common music knowledge. A key example would have to be a good friend of mine who proceeded to ask me, "Huh? Who's Van Halen?" Is it just me, or is the current generation of students becoming less and less exposed to various kinds of music.

I'm not one to judge, or say some music isn't good, but when I hear people talking about music that solely centers around hip-hop/rap, and expressing no knowledge of music other than what they were raised to listen to, it saddens me. Because, it's fine to like that style in my opinion. But it's not okay to be oblivious to all other kinds of music.

Now, maybe it's just me, or my area that follows this trend. I don't know. You tell me. But being a kid who can tell you all about bands and artists spanning vast genres and eras, I hope I can say at least that I have a deeper appreciation for music than those centered around one style. So it all comes down to a personal opinion really. I think that it's fine these people like that music. But I really can't stand it when someone comes up to me and says, "So, wait, WHO is Green Day?"
